About Joe Maiocco
Bass trombonist Joe Maiocco currently performs with the Kansas City Symphony and is a performing artist with the S.E. Shires Company. Since his appointment to the orchestra, he has also appeared as a guest musician with the San Francisco Symphony and was a Tanglewood Music Center Fellow in the summer of 2025.
Before joining the Kansas City Symphony, Maiocco studied at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music, where he worked with Michael Mulcahy, Randall Hawes, Douglas Wright, and Reed Capshaw while performing with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. During his first year, he appeared as a guest musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, gaining valuable orchestral experience early in his career.
Maiocco began his formal trombone studies in 2019, in the 8th grade with Brett Shuster of the University of Louisville. He later went on to study with Charles Vernon of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Mark Fisher of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, whose mentorship played a key role in his development. He has performed with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America under Marin Alsop, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and on tour throughout South America, and made his solo debut with the Louisville Orchestra in March 2024 after winning multiple national competitions.
