Why a Hand Grip?
The trombone is not a naturally ergonomic instrument. In a standard playing position, nearly all of the instrument's weight falls on the pinky and ring fingers - a small muscle group never designed to bear that load. Over time, this leads to tension, fatigue, and long-term strain, especially for bass trombonists.
A hand grip redistributes that weight across the back and side of your hand, freeing your fingers entirely. The trombone becomes an extension of your hand, held by gravity rather than muscle effort, leaving you relaxed, stable, and focused on your playing.
The result is longer practice sessions, less fatigue, and a more consistent sound. For many players, a grip isn't just a comfort accessory - it's a long-term investment in the health of their playing.
Why Choose the Maiocco Design Hand Grip?
A note from Joe Maiocco:
I'll be honest with you - I've tested premium hand grips priced at up to $600 that deliver incredible comfort, stability, and customization. But here's what surprised me: after designing and testing my own grip, I found myself reaching for it more and more. The ergonomic balance and lightweight feel just work, without the bulk or tedious assembly of traditional designs. While other options on the market range from leather grips that wear out over time to metal braces that sacrifice comfort for strength, I wanted something that didn't compromise - and didn't cost a fortune. As a trombonist who's tried them all, I designed this grip to give you premium performance and feel without the premium price tag.
How do I know it will fit my instrument?
This grip has been designed and tested using Shires, Bach, and Edwards large bore tenor and bass trombones. For small bores, the hot-water molding process can be used to make the clip tighter for a better fit - however, some small bores have a brace running through the bell section that may get in the way.
Instruments outside of those tested may still work, but compatibility is not guaranteed. If the grip does not fit your instrument, you may be eligible for a refund - contact us at maioccomusicdesign@gmail.com.
How to Mold Your Hand Grip:
Important Safety & Use Disclaimer:
This process involves boiling water and can cause serious burns. Please proceed with caution. Do not over-bend the grip - excessive force or bending beyond its natural range may cause the grip to crack or snap. Maiocco Music Design is not responsible for damage or injury resulting from improper use.
Snaps right on to any horn. I've tried it on several. Its very comfortable. For those with larger/thicker hands, you may want to use the shaping instructions to widen it a bit.

It’s a good product, but I would have expected a better finish on the edges; I had to sand down the uneven edges.
It’s very easy to shape to fit your hand perfectly and seems sturdy. So far, I think it’s very good.
One major downside is the handling of shipments to Europe: I paid €19 for the hand grip, €23 for postage to Spain and then another €20 (without warning) for customs duties. I know there is a retailer in Europe, but their prices are more than double those in the US, which makes the product less economically attractive.

Ottimo grip ! Dolore al braccio scomoarso ,! Funzionale anche sul trombone tenore e in particolare sul mio vecchio Holton 158. Lo userò per la premiere del mio concerto con la Stanford Wind Symphony. Grazie !
